Ocean Jasper has been found in only one place on Earth - Madagascar. More specifically, the villages of Kabamby and Marovato. It is a newer gemstone/crystal, found in the last century. It is believed, although not mentioned by name, that it was first written about in Alfred Lacroix’s Mineralogy of Madagascar in 1922.

While it’s commonly thought to be an Orbicular Jasper, it is now thought to be closer to the mineral Chalcedony instead. Some pieces have been found to have bands of Druzy Quartz in them.

Ocean Jasper is identified by the unique circular orb patterns in the stone and it comes in a variety of colors. Most pieces contain green, white, grayish blue, or Earth tones. Other colors seen are yellow, red and orange hues, with dark red, pink, and purple being less common.

Ocean Jasper is a calming stone with a strong connection to the Water Element. It has also been called the Atlantis Stone, in the belief it is connected to the lost city, so it has an element of mystery as well as hope and renewal. It helps to bring patience the release of anger and other harmful thoughts and negative feelings. Holding it over your heart can bring a sense of peace and focus, restoring balance to your Heart Chakra and strengthening your base Chakra.

Ocean Jasper’s powers are at its strongest when close to you. Wearing a pendant over your heart will help keep you strong and balanced, as well as keeping negative energies away.

Combining this stone with Black Tourmaline, Fire Agate, and Moldavite will strengthen your psychic protections and keep negative energies at bay.   Ocean Jasper can be cut into many shapes and each shape helps promote its calming energy in a different way.

  • Sphere: Projects energy in an even and balanced form throughout the room.

  • Slab/Slice: Add the energies of Ocean Jasper to whatever stone you place upon it.

  • Pendant Stones: Keeps the energy close to your body.

Placing your stone next to water, such as an indoor fountain or even a fish tank, will help to enhance the energies.

As with any healing stone/crystal, your Ocean Jasper needs to be cleansed and its energy renewed. Since it is a water stone, you should fill a glass bowl (not metal) until it is half to two thirds full. Add sea salt and then submerge your stones. Most people leave them overnight but for deeper cleansing they can be left to up to a week. Remove the stones and rinse them under cool, running water, making sure that all the salt is rinsed away. Take the used salt water and dispose of it as it is now full of absorbed negative and unwanted energies.

Another method is to bury your stones in dry salt and leave them for up to a week, again making sure to rinse thoroughly and dispose of the used salt.

Some people like to leave their cleansed stones in sunlight or moonlight to help with the energy renewal. The sun gives stronger energies while the moon gives a more gentle energy. Since the ocean tides are connected to the moon cycles, I prefer to dry mine under moonlight.

Ocean Jasper is an essential stone for keeping a peaceful balance in your Heart Chakra, but it’s natural beauty and calming power will also enhance your home and bring balance to your living space.
